The Great Gatsby movie character posters

… and as we’re on the subject of The Great Gatsby and that there’s a slight chance that you haven’t seen them (shame on you!) Here are the wonderful movie posters that you’ll soon be seeing cardboard cut outs off at your local cinema or plastered around the subway. Pretty aren’t they?

Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin costume design collaboration for The Great Gatsby

Calling all Gatsby fans!

Costume Designer Catherine Martin collaborated with Italian designer extraordinaire, Miuccia Prada best known of course for her label Prada and it’s secondary line Miu Miu (so much love for this brand – I will one day own those beautiful cat print shoes).

Miuccia has revealed sketches of some of the costumes from their collaboration which are all truly beautiful.

The Great Gatsby

This orange organza dress is covered with plastic, is scale-like with sequin embroidery and was inspired by Prada’s autumn/winter 2011-12 show. I can see this sketch coming to life with a cigarette holder in one hand and  red lipstick being applied with the other hand. I love the fur too, so very elegant.

The Great Gatsby

This bustier dress, embroidered with pearls, stones and sequinned fringing was inspired by a modern take on the Twenties silhouette. What a beauty. I’m so impressed by the sequinned fringing – it’s a complete switch between the classic 1920s look you expect to see with a slight modern edge.

The Great Gatsby

This is one sparkling number! A multi-striped sequinned dress embroidered with plastic and inspired by Prada’s spring/summer 2011 collection.

The colour of this dress is so stunning. A knee-length dress in octane-coloured tulle, lined in matching silk cady and embellished with Swarovski crystals. The twenties headband is the perfect finishing touch.

Having worked together previously, director Baz Luhrmann and Miuccia have a special relationship and seem to share the same ideas. Costume Designer Catherine Martin told Vogue “Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past,” said Martin. “This connection is central to our relationship with Miuccia Prada on The Great Gatsby, and has connected our vision with hers. In the same way Nick Carraway reflects on a world that he is within and without, we have tried to create an environment that the audience will be subconsciously familiar with, yet separated from.”

The way they want the costumes to be reflected to their audience has definitely worked for me – there’s an obvious contrast between a classical twenties costume with modern day ideas which have produced such fascinating and stunning designs that I’m sure all Great Gatsby fans and anybody remotely interested in fashion will appreciate.

The countdown to May continues …
